The Latest in the Fight For Good Jobs

On April 15th, hundreds of workers and community members took part in a three day, 28 mile march from Hollywood to the Docks of San Pedro as a symbolic way of showing that we are committed to fighting for good jobs. Now check out where we are at in this ongoing battle.

Television and Radio Performers: Reach Tentative Agreement on Primetime TV Contract
On May 28th, the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists—the nation's second largest performers’ union, representing 70,000 members, including approximately 52,000 working actors reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers on a new three-year primetime television contract. The agreement is subject to approval by AFTRA’s National Board and ratification by the union’s membership. Read More>

Hotel Workers: Win First Union Contract at Glendale Hilton
On June 5th, housekeeping, food service, and front office employees stood side by side with management of the Hilton Los Angeles North/Glendale to sign their first collective bargaining agreement. Read More>

Healthcare Workers: Settlement Reached Between Motion Picture and Television Fund and SEIU UHW
On April 25th, SEIU United Healthcare Workers – West and Motion Picture & Television Fund announced that they had reached a tentative agreement on a new five-year contract, which provides stable and predictable wages and benefits for more than 570 healthcare workers at MPTF Hospital and Health Centers through October 2012. The agreement has been unanimously recommended by the SEIU UHW bargaining committee to its membership, and ratification is expected by the end of the week. Read More>

Construction Workers: Passage of Landmark Construction Policy to Provide Good, Middle-Class Careers

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa joined construction workers, activists and clergy on Wednesday, April 23rd to celebrate the passage of a historic “Construction Careers and Project Stabilization Policy,” by the Los Angeles City Council.  The policy was created by the Community Redevelopment Agency of the City of Los Angeles (CRA/LA) in collaboration with the Los Angeles/Orange County Building and Construction Trades Council, the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO and the Los Angeles Alliance for a New Economy (LAANE). Hotel Workers: California Supreme Court Rules on Requiring Hotels Near LAX to Pay a Living Wage

On April 10th, faith and community leaders joined hotel workers in welcoming a ruling by the California Supreme Court requiring hotels near LAX to pay their workers a living wage. When it was enacted last year, the landmark LAX Enhancement Zone Ordinance required LAX hotels to pay the city’s living wage rate of $10.64 an hour ($9.39 for those with employer-provided health benefits) to thousands of hotel workers who work at 13 hotels on the Century Corridor. That wage is adjusted annually according to the Consumer Price Index to reflect cost-of-living increases. Read More>

Janitors: Thousands Demonstrate Outside Buildings Owned by The Irvine Company
As contracts covering more than 16,000 California janitors expired, on April 30th,  thousands of janitors marched and rallied outside buildings owned by The Irvine Company in Century City and in Orange County’s Fashion Island while playing drums, waving brooms and chanting. Read More>        Seals
Security Officers:  Inter-Con Workers Fighting for Justice at Kaiser
More than 1,500 California workers are in year three of their struggle to form a union with SEIU, improve their jobs, and ensure safe and secure hospitals in our community. Inter-Con and Kaiser continue to break the law and now they are striking Inter-Con across California to protect their civil rights. Read More>

Carwash workers: Coalition Announces Boycott of L.A. Carwashes
On May 7th a group of carwash workers announced that they have filed unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board against Vermont Hand Wash, a carwash owned by Benny Pirian, for retaliating against workers who spoke out about the abuses in their workplace. Read More>

The March from “Hollywood to the Docks”

On April 15th to the 17th, actors, janitors, longshore workers, and many other workers along with members of the community will march 28 miles from Hollywood to the docks of San Pedro. These individuals will symbolize over 350,000 workers who, this year, will be fighting to stay in the middle class or move themselves out of poverty.

The International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU) Local 10 Drill Team will join marchers to kick-off the March from Hollywood to the Docks on April 15th. Read more
